P103:Promoting STEM education through K-16 partnerships

Phil McBride (Eastern Arizona College, USA)

In an effort to promote STEM education, Eastern Arizona College (EAC) has formed several partnerships with area K-12 schools, three counties, and a university. This presentation will outline these partnerships and provide evidence of the impact these partnerships have had on both students and teachers. The Eastern Arizona Science Initiative (EASI) is composed of grades 5-14 science faculty from school districts in two counties. EASI plans and hosts three week-long summer science camps. In partnership with the County Superintendents of three counties, EAC hosts the Southeastern Arizona Teachers Academy. EAC sponsors an annual Student Chemistry Adventure and Engineering Day. EAC engineering students travel to Arizona State University to visit the engineering department and ASU brings Engineering faculty and students to EAC to encourage students to pursue an Engineering degree. These partnerships represent a team effort amongst all educators in the community to reach out and improve science education.
