P112: Chemistry or art? Teaching or research? Unexpected and amazing connections at midcareer

Michael Columbia (Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne, USA)

After attending the CWCS-sponsored Chemistry & Art workshop in 2005, I developed a general education lab-based course in this area; I have been able to offer it annually for the past five years.  This experience has generated several opportunities to renew and expand both the teaching and research aspects of my career. In this presentation, I will detail three of these:  1) expansion of a project from this course involving lake pigment degradation into research projects for undergraduate chemistry students; 2) discovery and application of principal component analysis to digital color data, and 3) interactions with students and faculty members in our visual communication department that have revitalized darkroom usage and may lead to establishing a certificate program in historical photographic processes.
