P125: Pre-service teachers' familiarity and interest in electrochemistry

Asiana Banda, Frackson Mumba (Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, USA)

Research studies on electrochemistry have mainly focused teachers’ conceptual knowledge of electrochemistry concepts. Studies have not reported on teachers’ levels of familiarity with and interest in electrochemistry. Yet, research shows that teachers’ familiarity with and interest in a science discipline or topic has influence on their instructional practice and subsequently student achievement. Therefore, this study examined 66 Zambian Junior high school pre-service science teachers’ familiarity with 17 electrochemistry concepts that were taught in schools and teacher education courses. We also investigated their levels of interest in learning more about the 17 electrochemistry concepts. Data were collected through a questionnaire. The results and implications will be reported and discussed.
