P23: Using an electronic laboratory notebook and “Lab Tweets” in a biochemistry laboratory

Tracey Murray (Capital University, USA)

Electronic record-keeping has become the norm in almost every professional scientific field. In order to better prepare our students for this and to improve students’ record-keeping, the LabArchives electronic lab notebook (ELN) was used in the Biochemistry Laboratory course (Chemistry 452) at Capital University. Along with the use of the ELN, students were also asked to put “Lab Tweets” into their notebooks every 15 minutes. Because the ELN is time-stamped, the professor was able to monitor the completion of this task. In addition to positive student feedback about the use of LabArchives, the students also kept better records of what they were doing during the lab period.
