P249: Effective use of personal response systems in large general chemistry lecture classes

Petra VanKoppen (University of California – Santa Barbara, USA)

Personal Response Systems (or clickers) can improve academic performance if the questions address common misconceptions, promote active class discussions, and result in follow up questions from the instructor and from students.  Students need to be prepared for lecture to actively participate in discussion questions.  In this talk I will discuss how to motivate students to effectively prepare for discussion questions in lecture. I will also discuss characteristics of effective clicker questions, including a number of example questions and responses.
