P365: Lost in SciFinder: Development and impact of a research-like experience in a second-semester organic chemistry lab for chemistry majors

Michael Slade, Brandon Kobilka, Kim Linenberger, Nicola Pohl, Jeffrey Raker (Iowa State University, USA)

The ability to locate applicable literature and translate that literature into laboratory experiments is a necessary skill for chemists. We will describe the incorporation of a multi-week literature-based research-like experience in a second-semester organic chemistry course for chemistry majors. Details of the development and implementation of the project will be described. The results of several assessment initiatives will be used to depict the impact of the research-like experience. Future directions and suggestions for the incorporation of a similar experience at other institutions will be given.
