P394: New SN1 versus SN2 sophomore organic chemistry laboratory experiment

There are few published sophomore organic chemistry laboratory experiments that assist undergraduate students in discerning whether a reaction will proceed via the SN1 or SN2 pathway.  This paper discusses the development of an instructional experiment that explores the substitution pathways involved when crotyl halides react with acetate nucleophiles under various conditions.  Once a student completes the synthetic experiment, gas chromatography is used for product analysis.  Comparison of gas chromatographic results between students that complete different synthetic experiments facilitates substitution pathway determination.  Also discussed will be the implementation of this new experiment into a multi-section sophomore organic chemistry instructional laboratory of approximately 80 students.
