P415: Recruiting and preparing future chemistry teachers at CU-Boulder

Laurie Langdon, Susan Hendrickson, Robert Parson (University of Colorado – Boulder, USA)

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado, Boulder, has become more involved in recruiting and preparing future high school chemistry teachers in recent years. Since 2006, the department has hired undergraduate Learning Assistants (LAs) to work with students in General Chemistry and Physical Chemistry courses. The 15% of LAs who decide to become chemistry teachers are eligible for NSF Noyce Fellowships. These Noyce fellows work with faculty and instructors in the Chemistry Department on research and curriculum development projects. We will describe how these opportunities, and others, help to prepare our future chemistry teachers.
