Chemistry laboratory assessment at the Milwaukee School of Engineering has focused on evaluating students’ ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data. Assessment results are used for course, program and institutional assessment. Evaluation of the assessment data inspired the faculty to switch to an inquiry-based laboratory manual specifically to improve students’ ability to design an experiment. Preliminary assessment results from the change to inquiry-based model where students have far greater opportunity to practice experimental design will be compared to previous assessment data.
