P437: Creative science inquiry experiences in organic chemistry and quantitative analysis

Amy Johnson, Ruth Ann Armitage, Harriet Lindsay (Eastern Michigan University, USA)

The Creative Scientific Inquiry Experience (CSIE) Program at Eastern Michigan University links small clusters of science, technology and math courses through a common theme in order to enhance student performance and persistence. The CSIE cluster combining Organic Chemistry I and Quantitative Analysis was first offered around an environmental chemistry theme in 2008. After analyzing a variety of assessment data from that cluster, the faculty members retooled the structure of the classes in order to more clearly highlight the interconnectedness of the material. The most notable changes took place in the multi-week culminating lab project. This presentation will include assessment and interview data from the latest offering as well as highlight the differences in student experiences and attitudes between the 2008 and 2010 iterations of the orgo/quant CSIE cluster.
