P484: Tabletop halogen reactvity series

David R.(Randy) Sullivan (University of Oregon, USA)

Demonstrating the relative reactivity of halogens can be problematic in a classroom with no fume hood.  But the use of saturated aqueous solutions of chlorine and bromine allow the instructor to demonstrate the oxidation of bromide ion by chlorine and the oxidation of iodide ion by bromine without introducing significant amounts of halogen vapors into the classroom.  The color changes of the solutions make this demo interesting and attractive.
