P492: Scandals and blunders in science: Wikipedia project

Jennifer Muzyka (Centre College, USA)

First year students at Centre College take a seminar type general education course, with a variety of topics to choose from.  I recently taught “Scandals and Blunders in Science,” which focused on distinguishing research misconduct from errors in judgment made by scientists.  One assignment used in this course had students work in groups on specific cases of research misconduct.  The culmination of this project required the students to write an article for Wikipedia and give a group presentation in class.  Students registered as Wikipedia editors and uploaded their articles to Wikipedia as a required part of the assignment.
