P60: SCI ENCountErs: Teaching and learning science at the local Boys and Girls Clubs

Andrew Greenberg (University of Wisconsin-Madison, US), Brittland DeKorver (University of Wisconsin – Madison, USA)

After-school science clubs allow children to experience hands-on experiments in a low-pressure setting. The Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has created SCI ENCountErs, an after-school science club in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dane County in order to provide this experience to underrepresented youth. This presentation will discuss lessons learned from undergraduate volunteers, community partnerships, and strategies for implementing a successful after-school science club.
