Why do we (still) lecture ? There are numerous answers to this question, but ultimately how do lectures help students become more independent in their journey to becoming self-directed learners ? Rigorous adhesion to course content by the instructor and student promotes a feeling of safety but discourages thinking “outside the box”. Chemistry is a subject built around the application of fundamental concepts to the content material. This presentation will highlight the pros (and cons) of removing lectures, and allowing the students to discover how their knowledge of fundamental concepts can explain new content.
