P85: Longitudinal effects of course-embedded undergraduate research

Undergraduate research experiences have proven to be important for educating students in STEM fields.  Implementation of course-embedded research may bring similar opportunities to students who may not have the advantage to participate in extracurricular research experiences. We have developed a course-embedded approach to undergraduate research, implemented it at over 15 institutions over the course of 6 years and carried out detailed assessment consisting of multiple types of data collection and analysis. The longitudinal study on the Center for Authentic Science Practice in Education (CASPiE) curriculum was carried out to assess its impact on students’ retention in STEM, involvement in research, and academic performance in chemistry. Participants’ perceptions and reflections of the program were also investigated. Students who took the traditional chemistry curriculum served as the control group. The main results of the longitudinal study on CASPiE and its implications for implementations of course-embedded research laboratory curricula will be presented.
