P856: Chemistry of emergency response

Dave Finster (Wittenberg University, USA)

This poster will present an overview of a new chemistry course designed for non-science majors.  The course describes the molecular understanding of fire, explosions, spills, hazardous materials, toxic substances, and on-scene detection of unknown substances.  About three-quarters of the most-commonly discussed topics in a two-term general chemistry course are introduced in this single course, although not at the same depth.  Thus, this topic is a good vehicle to present chemical concepts in an engaging framework.
