College students who take first year general chemistry are often not engaged in trying to understand the material in the class. This disengagement is a problem for our country’s future scientific prowess due to the scientific nature of many factors that affect modern society. The United States Air Force Academy has taken a bold approach to solving this problem. The Academy has decided to use an unconventional textbook Chemistry in Context during the first semester of their general chemistry classes for science majors as well as non-science majors. This poster will analyze the performance, perceptions, and engagement of the freshman students in the classes.
