The theme Chemistry and the Automobile has been used to teach a two-semester General Chemistry course to engineering students. In more general terms, four broad areas beneficial to an engineer’s technical training receive attention: energy, the environment, materials, and instrumentation. To accomplish this goal some traditional topics have been abandoned to allow others to take their place. An overview of the course content will be provided along with some specific examples. New labs that have been developed to showcase the aforementioned theme will also be highlighted.
