P942: Nanoscience as an integrative first year experience course

Richard Schwenz, Kimberly Pacheco (University of Northern Colorado, USA)

The University of Northern Colorado offers incoming freshmen the opportunity to participate in a variety of learning communities. The learning community model brings a group of students together in a set of classes and a first year experience class. We created a learning community for science majors in which the students would take an introductory science class, a Math class, English composition and Introduction to Nanoscience. The nanoscience class was designed to integrate the various students’ knowledge of science laboratory experience with nanoscience instruments, the ethical issues of Nanoscience, and a prescribed set of lessons on student survival skills for college. The course will be described along with the results of student and faculty evaluations.
