S10: Outreach for K-8 students: What Are You Doing?

Organizer: Julie Henderleiter (Grand Valley State University, USA)

Presider: Julie Henderleiter (Grand Valley State University, USA)

Many individuals from colleges, universities, and industry are involved in science/chemistry outreach through schools and formal or informal community programs. Their outreach goals often include enhancing the science understanding of elementary and middle school students. Steep K-8 budget cuts and emphasis in schools on standardized testing, often focused on math and reading, has led some elementary and middle school science programs to suffer. Outreach often supplements-or replaces-what happens in schools. What is the chemistry community doing, at a grass-roots level, to keep science flourishing in the minds of K-8 students? Presentations in this symposium will share descriptions of formal and informal outreach programs and activities that impact children in your area. Come and see the creative ways that chemists are enhancing K-8 science!
