S15: Vertical Integration of Chemistry Topics and Assessment to Improve Student Learning

Organizers: Paul Szalay (Muskingum University, USA), Deepa Perera (Muskingum University, USA), Eric Schurter (Muskingum University, USA), Lois Zook-Gerdau (Muskingum University, USA)

Presider: Paul Szalay (Muskingum College, USA)

Vertical integration is the continuous development of specific topics longitudinally through multiple courses. Each subsequent student exposure increases in the level of detail and complexity. The purpose of this symposium is to present examples of and methods for vertically integrating topics in the chemistry curriculum. An emphasis will be placed on the pedagogical approaches employed for vertical integration implementation and the methods of assessment utilized at various institutions. A variety of questions will be considered. What types of curricular planning are necessary for effective implementation? What benefits and pitfalls are encountered in this approach? How can a cohesive and comprehensive assessment plan be designed?
