Organizer: Jason Overby (College of Charleston, USA)

Presider: Jason Overby (College of Charleston, USA)

In recent years, the atoms first approach to teaching general chemistry has seen widespread interest and adoption at a variety of institutions. This symposium will examine the implementation and execution of atoms first in lecture. How has atoms first been executed at various schools? Are there disadvantages and/or pitfalls associated with atoms first? What outcomes have been realized by using the atoms first approach? Of particular interest is the effect of atoms first on the laboratory curriculum. How has the laboratory course been adapted to meet the needs of the atoms first sequence in lecture, if at all? All aspects of atoms first in general chemistry will be examined.
