S59b: Chemistry for All

Organizers: Amy Micklos Lewis (Purdue University, USA), Megan Grunert (Western Michigan University, USA)

Presider: Amy Lewis (Purdue University, USA)

A number of groups are underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, including women, persons with disabilities, and some ethnic groups. In order for science to be for all students, we need to consider ways to improve access and foster supportive learning environments for individuals in these underrepresented groups. The goal of this symposium will be to invite researchers, educators, and students to discuss how we can overcome the obstacles faced by these underrepresented groups. Topics will include: laboratory and content accessibility, factors that influence success, persistence, and decision-making. This symposium will also highlight the broader implications that can be generated from research with persons from underrepresented groups to promote inclusion, diversity, and improved pedagogical practices in chemistry.
