W33: Alternate Classroom Assessment: Creative Exercises

Deborah Sauder, Georgia Gwinnett College
Scott Lewis, Kennesaw State University
Tim Howell, Gainesville State College
Jessica Orvis, Georgia Southern University
Patricia Todebush, Clayton State University

Instructors employing active pedagogical techniques or interested in alternative assessments are invited to participate in this workshop which has the goal of extending the “active” label to open-ended classroom assessment.  The workshop will employ a participant active format.  While inviting instructors to share their experiences with alternative assessment efforts, the workshop will primarily provide a guided experience to introduce Creative Exercises, CEs, an open-ended assessment strategy we have developed.  Creative Exercises are intended to be easily graded; to provide consistent, valid results; to allow both developmental and summative assessment; and to improve students’ ability to retain and interconnect the concepts presented in the course.  Our initial round of studies has demonstrated that CE performance in Principles of Chemistry I is moderately correlated with ACS standard exam performance.  In addition, CEs have provided faculty with clear information on student misconceptions, allowing intervention techniques to be focused on topics of particular concern. Participants will be invited to include their students in our NSF sponsored study; 3-hour session.

Intended Audience: HS/UG
